Structure and Advantages of a Double-Acting Hydraulic Cylinder

A double-acting hydraulic cylinder is a device capable of executing bidirectional movement using hydraulic pressure. In this component, hydraulic fluid applies force to both sides of the piston, allowing precise control of the cylinder’s movement in both directions.

At MPH, we exclusively offer products from reliable manufacturers committed to high quality, including all types of hydraulic cylinders we carry. Our team has years of experience and is well-versed in the latest equipment on the market, ready to assist you with advice or additional information if needed.

Structure of a Double-Acting Hydraulic Cylinder

This part of the hydraulic system consists of several smaller components.

  • Cylinder Housing: The outer casing of the cylinder, containing the piston and hydraulic fluid.
  • Piston: Located inside the cylinder, the piston is moved by hydraulic pressure.
  • Seals: Seals play a crucial role in preventing fluid from leaking out of the cylinder, thus maintaining the required pressure.
  • Hydraulic Inlet and Outlet Ports: There are two separate ports through which hydraulic oil flows into both sides of the piston.

Operating Principle

The operating principle of a double-acting hydraulic cylinder is relatively simple. The 50 mm hydraulic cylinder available at MPH can be precisely controlled on both sides by the incoming hydraulic fluid.

The piston performs two opposite movements. During the forward motion, hydraulic fluid flows into one side of the piston, pushing it forward. Then, the fluid flows to the other side, causing the piston and piston rod to retract to their starting position.

Applications

Due to its bidirectional, highly controllable, and precise operation, the double-acting hydraulic cylinder has a wide and varied range of applications.

  • Construction: These devices are very popular in construction. Excavators, loaders, and diggers, where strong, well-controlled movement is needed, often rely on this solution.

  • Industrial Machinery: Press machines and material handling systems also benefit from the ability to perform bidirectional work.

  • Agriculture: In tractors, combines, and other farming equipment, movement is hydraulically controlled for optimal efficiency. In mobile applications, where space is often limited, hydraulic equipment performs particularly well due to its high energy density. This means they can exert enormous force despite their compact size.

Maintenance of Double-Acting Hydraulic Cylinders

Regular maintenance is essential for the long-term, reliable operation of hydraulic systems. Every component is subjected to intense forces during operation, making it crucial to assess their condition.

A worn component with diminished performance can impact the entire system, potentially leading to the failure of other parts that bear the extra load.

Maintenance work should ideally be conducted by a specialist who can quickly and effectively assess the condition of the parts and replace them if necessary.
